Well,
summer's almost over, so here's a song from melody.'s latest album, Lei Aloha.
If I have the luxury that is time, maybe I'll post something here before school
starts. Ja!

Eh, hello mina-san! It's been quite a while, ne? Been busy with school, projects, exams, more exams. I wish I didn't miss anything or something, that would have been...darn unfortunate. And now, the first Colophorn for 2008! (Ata, I'm not keeping count)
29th Gabriel Bernardo Lecture Series
Last March 14, was the annual UP-SLIS GAB lecture series (The topic was "The Library in a Changing Age of Information"). At the risk of saying something unbelievably stupid, I will refrain from making any smart-ass comments about it. That said, it was an actually a very entertaining and enlightening talk (Well, it did felt like a talk, rather than a lecture). Personally, I thought that Manolo Quezon's opining that librarianship is becoming more of a vocation than a profession is more of a confirmation of what many of LIS students, teachers and librarians maybe thinking. As for the other things he said, well, just wait for the Centennial Edition of the Philippine Journal of Librarianship.
After the lecture, I went straight to SLIS...and lo and behold, no one was there, and no one could enter. Sayang, akala ko wala nang pasok sa 170...grr...hehe. By the way, I think that I have been to Balay Kalinaw way too many times these past couple of months. Also, scroll down for details on when I'll be dumping most of my photos.
My trip... to the Manila Zoo!
Why the hell you ask? It was for a project (Which you will see later), of course! I honestly thought I was going to be disappointed. But you know what? I was! (Pwned!) I cannot clearly remember details from my trip when I was, like 6 years old, but I can definitely say that the zoo was way better then. Today, there are quite a few animals in oh-my-lord do you call those enclosures? I mean, no wonder that animal rights groups want the zoo closed. Honestly, I think that the only thing that's going for it is the people; the veterinarians, the zoo staff, who work everyday to oversee the health and well-being (or what's left of it) of the animals. Despite what you could call deplorable conditions, the City Government is still trying to rehabilitate the zoo, although I don't think it would really make much difference anyway. To go to the Manila Zoo, take the LRT Yellow Line, and get off Quirino Station. Then, take a cab. Or if you are cheap like me, walk to the darn place. It's along Quirino Avenue. Also in this photo set: a Lucky Man VOX Exclusive! Two Tigers Mating!
My projects... online!
Since the semester's over, I might as well share with you some of my projects I did for two of my courses.
Japan-O-Media
Japan-O-Media is Japan-O-Media. What? Basically, it's a review site for everything Japanese. Music, movies, computers and whatnot. I haven' t finished uploading the site, but I hear it's working.
Kahayupan Index
This is a project for our LIS 64 class. It is an index to animal images, most of which, I took at the, yes, Manila Zoo.
I dunno if you noticed, but both the sites basically have the same coding! I always keep it in case of a project, so I could just copy and paste it. Haha! And well, we were allowed to pass the same project, so there.
A Plethora of Topics (Meh~)
- Argh! The semester is finally over! No more waking up at 4 AM every weekday and boarding a bus by 6. Sigh~~~ The only thing that kinda pissed me off are the free bus rides. A company is testing these CNG buses for a limited time, and they will be testing these buses in Laguna and Batangas. Now, most of the time, I ride normal (Diesel) buses to Cubao, or crappy ordinary buses to Fairview (So I can get off at Philcoa, thus saving me time and money). The Laguna routes for the free rides? Calamba to Fairview. AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Lord, why the timing?!
- I did say a plethora right? Okay, not really. I'll be writing a review for my not-so new portable media device soon. And maybe a music colophorn for the first quarter of 2008? Eh? Not so shabby?
- Gosh, I want one of those Audio Technica headphones. The SQ5 White is the headphones used by Utada Hikaru in her Heart Station video. Naturally, I want them (These cans are also the pair that Shun Oguri uses). The ON3 also looks really cool. Great for casual use, because of the size and the metal head band. すごいですよ!
- Anyone saw the J-Melo special last week! Woot! I am so excited! New graphics, new set, but the same great host...melody. Have you seen her new site and myspace page?! So cute!!! Plus both sites have sample audio from her upcoming album, Lei Aloha.
- Anyone saw TV Patrol last night? Biggest TV news re-branding disappointment since GMA aired 24 Oras and moved-in to that crappy yellow set from an otherwise professional looking red-slash-fake wood (Kinda like BBC World circa-2000 meets an American news set). The new set simply lacked depth and color it once had. It passes off as bland and simply unappealing. The graphics...you call this a new look? It looked like a rehash from God knows where. Still better than the current on-screen package (I'm talking about stuff like the lower thirds and graphics bed here) of 24 Oras, though (Although 24 still has better bumpers and idents). And that opening billboard...boring. Seen it, done that. TVP had a better OBB during Korina Sanchez's stint as anchor. TVP has definitely seen better presentation. Sadly, this new re-branding is just forgettable. Also, please scrap Citizen Patrol. Or at least, get a fucking segment host. It sounds like an amateurish piece of crap (I can't find the words here...it's that bad). Once I saw this segment with a highschool student. Oh my God, she is sooo reading a poem (With the stops and the intonation. God bless her). I never cringed out of disgust because of a news program's presentation.
- 4Megaupload.com is a real blessing. Finally, a search service that you can use to look for files in Megaupload. This is really cool, just now I'm d-ling all the PVs I can find using the site. The only caveat I find is that the site only supports alphabetic searches (No Kanji, Romaji, Chinese, Thai, whatever), which is unfortunate, considering the amount of *files* uploaded in Chinese and all those old JPop PVs hiding from plain sight. If you have a premium account, then make sure you get the most out of it by using this site! (Actually, I'm thinking of renewing my premium membership...kahit one month lang).
- And now, let me present the photodump for 2nd Semester 2007-2008 (From my German and Psych 101 classes)

30. Kung di ka UP, anong school ka?

These are quite old. But, better late than never, eh? I warn you, though, that this will sound rather amateurish, but, heck, I just want to have fun. Just doing my part for the UP Centennial... (There's just something wrong about these posts...they're very geeky.)
The other day, I overheard someone saying something like the Diliman campus buildings are fugly, especially the old ones. Fugly ka 'din hayop ka. Sure, maybe other schools have new, sparkling edifices, but Diliman is quite different. And it just saddens me that that person happens to be from UP, too. To me, one of the thrills of walking around the campus is seeing all the history that surrounds the sprawling Diliman campus and in its buildings. Here are some of my favorites ^__^
- Quezon Hall, the admin building. Here, you could find, well, all the administrative brouhaha. The UP President Office is here, as well as the offices of the Vice Presidents. The building was designed by National Artist, Juan Nakpil, son of Julio Nakpil and Gregoria de Jesus (Wow, a family of heroes). Completed in 1950, the building is an example of the architect's Art Deco style, and at the same time, a tribute to the architecture of the UP Manila campus, the first site of the University.
- Gonzalez Hall, or the Main Library which also houses the School of Library and Information Studies, where I study. To most students, there are only three storeys in the Library; few people ever venture into the Third Floor (SLIS and Archives), and even fewer people can enter higher than that (The estimate is that there are at least seven levels). The building was also designed by Juan Nakpil, and when it opened in the 50's, the architecture of the Main Lib was highly praised for its high ceiling and ingenious layout. That has been, more or less, a curse for today's students. Before, there was a time when one had to wear sweaters in the campus because it was that cold. Do that today, you'd suffer from heat stroke. It can get really hot and humid, and is sometimes not very comfy for that rare extended studying. But, they take service very seriously here, so I'm not complaining.
- Carillon, the bell tower, was also designed by Nakpil. Its bells, ignored for many years, has now been replaced with shiny new ones, donated by UP's most important resource, its alumni. The 130-foot structure has withstood many storms and earthquakes and still stands high today. In the 1970's, the Carillon was used by students as a watch post during those very hard times of protest.
- UP Theater. I thought that this building was constructed fairly recently (1980s recently), but apparently, the current brick facade was only a part of the renovation. I think that Leandro Locsin (who happened to design the building next door, the FIlm Center, also of extensive brick work) designed it, but I'm not sure. It has been the site of various events, like the annual Freshmen convention, and last year's Miss Earth pageant (hehe). The last time I've been there is for a College of Music concert (Their rendition of Beethoven's Symphony no. 9 was breathtaking, by the way).
- Church of the Holy Sacrifice (Click here. I did parts of the article)
- Palma Hall / Melchor Hall are the one of the two twin buildings in Diliman. Contrary to popular belief, Nakpil did not design these buildings. Cesar Concio did, and these buildings defined the International style in the 1950s. The first two pictures came from the family photo archive. It is the newly completed Melchor Hall. The second picture is actually a restoration job by me. Hoot! My Photoshoping has improved! The sundial; a UP Diliman landmark, by the way, is located at the back of Melchor Hall.
Uh, how's it going everyone? It's been a while and I have been quite busy with school and stuff. And I'll continue to be this coming week. I have to do a book index and some periodicals indexing. Plus a report and another assignment I should sooo be doing right now. So, heads up!
I'm so bored. And nothing beats a playlist game (From http://anothernotebook.livejournal.com/). Here it goes! (Mine has two songs, one for the *normal* playlist and the other one for the JPop playslist)
IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?
So, here's how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc).
2. Put it on shuffle.
3. Press play.
4. For every question, type the song that's playing.
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button.
6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool.

Congratulations, you upgraded to Office 2007. Now, you're typing something in Japanese in Word, and then you suddenly realize that you need to provide Furigana (Phonetic Guide, the Kana on top of Kanji) for complicated Kanji. Sure, you could type it in manually, but, come on. There has to be a way, right? You search for it on Google, and nothing. You found instructions for Office 2003, but as you already know, Word 2007 has no Menus, just the new Ribbon feature. Well, here's how to type Furigana in Word 2007.
After installing Office 2007 and opening Word for the first time, it should look like this:
To turn on the Phonetic Guide, close Word and go to the Microsoft Office submenu on the Programs menu of the Start button. Go to Microsoft Office Tools and click on Microsoft Office 2007 Language Settings. If there isn't one, install it using the install disc. (I'm not sure, though. Mine's there already. ^__^) Scroll down on the Left pane and click on Japanese. Click on Add, then click on OK at the bottom of the dialog box. Start Word and you should notice new buttons on the Font section of the Home menu (or Ribbon, whatever you want to call it). One of those buttons is the Phonetic Guide. And everything else is straight forward. Tada! I think it also works with other languages, but I don't know how to, so here's a base guide anyway. If you've find it useful, please drop a comment! Thanks!
ガンバレ!
*Adding this to the JPop Group just in case you guys use Office 2007*

Gadgets and Tech
Undoubtedly, Apple dominated this year's gadget news, with the release of the highly-anticipated iPhone and new generation models of its best-selling IPod media players. The iPhone broke sales records, as far as smart phones are concerned, despite many criticism about its hardware and service tie-up. Nevertheless, the iPhone is today's status symbol. Of course, enterprising people have bought in the phone here at home, but let's see whether or not it gets an exclusive plan with one of the local cellphone service providers. The latest line of iPod flash-based players have not disappointed AFBs and casual users alike. The ridiculously expensive, but featured-packed iPod Touch, the video-capable iPod Nano (Some people didn't liked the fatter form, but after holding it, it felt rather sleek), and the iPod Shuffle (My advice, save your money and buy an older-gen Nano, or save up for a 3rd Gen one). The former flagship model, the iPod Classic had a rather dull update, and practically offered nothing new. One of the more bigger surprises of the year is the OLD Microsoft Zune, which retailed for as low as $80 (It's the brown model, though. But hey, 30 Gigs, scratch-proof body and a nice 3.0 inch screen, its a good value), and while the new Zune line-up didn't really shook things up, I felt it got undeserved reviews from AFBs and people pretending not to be AFBs. Screw you guys. The Zune 80 is much better than the iPod Classic.
But what if you can't afford that iPod Touch (like me)? Well, one can always look to, where else, China! We saw a lot of Chinese MP4 players released this year, and it looks like it would not change this year. While many companies took some liberties copying off designs from Apple, some have been a bit more blatant. Like this one from ONDA, a Chinese manufacturer. Well, they say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. One of the more popular brands in China, Meizu, has also released their new player this year, the Meizu M6 SL, which is a slimmer version of the hugely successful M6 that the company released in 2006. Well, if you ask me, despite the similarities of the M6 to the iPod, it is one of the best to come out of China, and hopefully, Meizu will improve on their hardware and firmware support. A planned touchscreen phone and media player release (Sounds familiar, ne?) was postponed to this year. (M8 Picture courtesy of MeizuMe.com)
For this year, we should see more advanced players from the mainland. My predictions are support for SDHC cards, more touchscreens (No multi-touch, though), support for album art, higher capacities for flash-based players and better audio chips.
January last year saw the public release of Windows Vista. And as usual, very mixed reactions. For one, the new Aero interface only worked with top-of-the-line machines, and normal machines had tough time even with normal applications. And we still don't know whether or not it is more secure than, oh, Windows XP with a full set of updates. Also this year, we saw the release of the new Office, and guess what, it is soooo slow. And the biggest gripe? Where the hell is the File menu? Phonetic support for Japanese Kanji was also a pain in the ass. Where the hell was it? (I'm gonna tell you where and how to activate it after I finish this).
There are many others, but we should be going...

w00t? Okay, whatever. I rarely used it this year. I remember using it once or twice out loud. Maybe Hoot! is a better word, whajathink?
END OF PART 2
How's it going, minna-san?! Before anything else, a Happy New Year. This is my first of (?) Colophorn rounding up the last year. Ready? Here goes...
Me Blogging?!
Yeah, It's probably a bad thing for the five (Me-hehe) of you that reads my blog, and for the rest of the society as well. I feel compelled to write for an audience that doesn't exist. Which is good, because whether I rant or just muse about the latest in tech or music, no one really cares, and I don't get flamed. Hah! Besides, I'm a shoe-in for Alzheimer's, so it's a good way of keeping the stuff stuck in the gooey corners of my mind out there. So what can you expect this year? More intelligent posts? More multimedia? Fascinating insight into the world of technology? Spot-on reviews of the latest movies and music? Probably none of the above. Still, I'm thankful, because I got to meet new people online, which perhaps includes, yes, you! Else, why the hell would you be here?
Me no text?
To the frustration of group members, classmates and family, I have abandoned cellphones for more than a year now. It started since I lost my N-Gage during my first semester in 2006. But, that in itself is not the reason, I loved my former cellphone number (+XXXXX4455330), and I don't want to buy those ridiculously expensive vanity phone numbers. I basically gave up, and depended on public payphones and email, which is not as bad as I thought. Today, I seldom carry one, which means that I am txt ilitr8. For this year, if you could give me an iPhone, I would pepper you with ridiculous text quotes and equally ridiculous trivia every day. Of course, that means mortgaging your house (or a parcel of property) just to get that fucking phone.
Me, the SLISter!
I suppose this is one of the things I have to be really thankful for. After two semesters on probation, I'm a full-fledged student of the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of the Philippines. I was even lucky enough to be a University Scholar during the second semester, and a College Scholar the previous semester. Probably a first-time, last-time thing, but ego-boosting nevertheless.
Aside from all the hours studying (Mmmkay...whatever), I also got to spend time with schoolmates outside the classroom. Also joined the SLIS-SC's VolCorps, and got into a quicksand helping with the SLIS Booth. Quicksand? Why, yes. I was just reading for a Psych101 quiz when Thel asked for people to help with the booth. I did, and boy, while I promised to help 'til my class started, I ended up there the whole day.
But it was okay, since we had some fun, and it shows how seemingly impossible tasks can be finished with (INSERT SOMETHING HERE...LOL!) Plus, despite of the many problems, the booth finished second on the contest. Coolness! Of course, that was just a part of my first real Christmas over at SLIS. Last, year, the Lantern Parade was cancelled, to the dismay of EVERYONE. This year turned out to be real fun. SLIS's lantern was a take on the popular Japanese anime, Doraemon, and of course, SLIS's very own, 26K girls! (It was even written here, but the School's name was wrong. But, ) Before the Lantern Parade, SLIS had a Christmas party with the faculty, staff, alumni and students (We're that small). It was really fun, and kudos, again to the Party Planning Committee. I promised that I would upload all the pictures, but my upload speed sucks, so I'll try a general upload later in the year. OK?
